Five great tequila cocktail recipes

Tequila has become increasingly popular over the last few years, partly thanks to the rise in the number of cocktail bars that use it in their wild and wonderful creations. If you fancy having a go at making your own tequila cocktails at home, here are some recipes to start you off.

The Margarita

This classic cocktail is refreshing, zingy and packs a punch. You’ll need 50ml of tequila, 25ml of fresh lime juice, 10ml of agave syrup and a couple of splashes of saline solution. Shake all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain the margarita before serving over ice.

The Moriarty

This sweet and sour concoction is perfect for anyone wanting something a little more sophisticated. Add 30ml of Don Julio tequila, 15ml of blood orange liqueur, 40ml of grapefruit juice, a tablespoon of lime juice and a splash of agave syrup to a cocktail shaker with a handful of ice and give the mixture a good shake. Pour into a glass and top up with perfectly chilled champagne, garnishing with fresh dill and a banana leaf!

The Arrest

This chocolatey creation is bittersweet with a rich, cocoa hit. You’ll need 30ml of demerara rum, 20ml of tequila, 10ml of salted syrup and, finally, five drops of mole bitters. Pour all the ingredients into a large glass with a single ice cube and stir well to blend. You can add a deliciously crusted rim by combining coffee, sugar, salt and pepper for an extra kick.

A simple yet stylish cocktail, this requires just 50ml of tequila, 20ml of lime juice, 30ml of Ting reduction (made by simmering Ting until it’s reduced by two-thirds and allowing it to cool). Stir the ingredients with crushed ice and enjoy.
